Mars, the planet of action, aggression, and conflict, has officially stationed retrograde in the sign of Leo and will continue its retrograde journey back into Cancer on January 6. From there, Mars will remain retrograde in Cancer until February 23, when it stations direct.
Mars retrograde in Leo and eventually Cancer will retrace the same degrees it covered during the pre-shadow period, which began on October 5.
This shift invites us to review, reassess, and reflect on the themes and storylines that were emerging during that time. If you need a reminder, revisit your journal entries, photo library, or social media posts from October to get a clearer sense of what might be resurfacing during this extended retrograde.
Check which houses Leo and Cancer occupy in your natal chart, along with any placements you have there—this will give you a clearer idea of how the retrograde will impact you.
When the planet of action and how much gas is in the tank stations retrograde, it nudges us to slow the F down and says, “Hey, maybe we need to rethink how and where we’re spending our energy”—even if life isn’t affording us the luxury of doing so, which can often lead to running on fumes.
Because of this, burnout is one of the most common themes during Mars retrograde.
(Some) Signs You Could Be Hitting Burnout:
• Tasks that usually feel easy now seem nearly impossible.
• Your body feels heavy, sluggish, or constantly tired (even after rest).
• You’re stuck in the same cycle of “doing,” but nothing feels satisfying.
• You feel disengaged, viewing life and work with a negative, apathetic attitude.
• Motivation is low, and getting started on tasks feels like a struggle.
Here’s the thing: the goal isn’t to completely stop during the retrograde but to be aware of your physical and energetic capacity.
Energy Work Tips During Mars Retrograde
1. Tend to your nervous system:
Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system is critical for preventing and reducing burnout. It helps shift the body out of the stress-driven fight, flight, or freeze mode, promoting relaxation, recovery, and a sense of calm. This process allows the body to restore energy, improve focus, and enhance resilience, making it easier to manage stress and prevent exhaustion.

2. Check in with your body:
Mars retrograde is a time to listen to your body more attentively.
• Frequently pause and ask yourself: What does my body need right now? More sleep? Better nutrition? A deep stretch?
• Start each day with a short body scan meditation to reconnect with your physical self.
3. Set micro-goals:
Break your to-do list into bite-sized pieces that feel manageable, and celebrate each tiny win. This can also help you gauge when you’re ready to take on more without stretching yourself too thin.
4. Rest and reclaim your energy:
Let’s be clear: resting isn’t laziness—it’s the most radical form of self-care right now. Schedule intentional downtime, whether it’s a 20-minute nap, a slow walk, or turning off your phone for an hour.
Remember: Productivity ≠ Worth
Let this retrograde be your permission slip to adjust your approach and pacing, and trust that slowing down—where and when you can—supports (eventually) speeding up.
