Signs from Beyond the Veil: Story Time!
We’re approaching the time of year when the veil is at its thinnest.
At certain times of the year, the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest.
This happens around Halloween (October 31), Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead, November 1/2), and All Souls' Day (November 2), as well as around solstices, equinoxes, and eclipses.
If you’re new to these written offerings, let me catch you up.
This July, my nonno (grandfather) passed away in a tragic accident. I still feel as I did then when I wrote, ‘None of this feels real, and I don’t know if it ever will feel real, simply because I don’t want it to be.’
As someone who’s always been able to connect with those who’ve passed on, I’ve received so many questions in my professional sphere about whether I’ve intentionally tried to communicate with my nonno since he passed.
The answer is no.
But that doesn’t mean our loved ones don’t try to communicate with us from beyond the veil, even if we’re not actively seeking it out.
What I have done is maintain connection via the cultural rituals I grew up with. As an Italian-Canadian who was raised Catholic and has some influence of Catholicism in my spiritual practices, maintaining connection has looked like having photos of my grandfather next to a continuously burning white candle enclosed in red glass with a cross on it, prayers that accompany the candle for the deceased, prayers that don’t, and venerating St. Peter (the patron saint of the keys and gatekeeper of Heaven).
The white candle is burned to symbolize the guiding light for the soul’s journey and to show ongoing remembrance and respect during the initial mourning period. The candle’s continuous burn reflects hope for peace and divine support for the departed. (We also do this throughout November and for All Souls’ Day.)
So despite not directly trying to communicate with my nonno, last week he sent me a very distinct sign to let me know he was with me.
I want to preface this by saying this is deeply vulnerable for me to share and that signs are more than just rainbows, angel numbers, butterflies, and feathers. If that’s how your loved one(s) show up for you—that’s great! But it’s not the same for everyone.
Signs can also be familiar scents, a particular song playing at just the right moment, or other forms. Sometimes they’re consistently the same sign, and sometimes they’re not. They’re personal to you and the relationship you shared with your loved one, so your sister might not receive the same sign from your deceased dad as you do.
Last week, I began noticing a specific scent everywhere I went. Whether I was inside a store, at home, or in any other location where it wouldn’t normally make sense to smell that scent, I would acknowledge it; it would vanish suddenly and then show up again the next day. This happened for a few days.
If someone was with me, I would ask, ‘Do you smell that too?’ but I would always get a ‘no’ in response.
I am someone who is both deeply spiritual and deeply grounded in the earthly realm. I don’t think everything’s a sign, so I chalked it up to just smelling something I couldn’t make sense of.
But the smell got stronger as the days went on until I started asking questions such as, ‘Reveal to me why I’m picking up on this scent.’
Then it hit me as an instant knowing via my intuition: this was my grandfather’s way of sending me a sign to let me know he was still with me.
It was no surprise that he sent me a sign he’s still with me in the form of a scent I strongly associate with him.
Intuition plays a key role in spirit communication because it acts as a bridge between this world and the spirit world. This is what allows you to interpret signs and messages with clarity.
My intuition allowed me to interpret this scent as a deeply personal and meaningful sign from my nonno, while the psychic ability of clairolfaction1—an ability that rarely ever shows up for me—was the means through which that message was delivered.
In other words, intuition helps you make sense of psychic experiences by giving them personal meaning and context. It guides you in understanding and connecting with the information you receive in a way that feels right for you.
Some people smell the scent of their grandmother's perfume or the signature baked goods she used to make as a sign of her presence, while others (like me) smell a scent that reminds them of the homemade wine their nonno used to make.
While the veil continues to thin, make note of whatever your intuition is telling you.

"Clairolfaction" refers to the ability to perceive or sense things beyond ordinary smell, often associated with extrasensory perception. It combines "clair," meaning clear or beyond ordinary perception, and "olfaction," relating to the sense of smell.
